A biography of Richard J. Coughlin, Head of Westland Oil Co. in Scobey, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 1080 and 1081. Parents: Dennis and Ellen (Leahy) Coughlin. Dennis was born, 1845, Ontario, Canada, and first came to the US at age 17. Ellen, of Irish parentage, was the daughter of James Leahy. Dennis Coughlin retired from farming and lived in Long Beach, CA. Coughlin children: Richard J. (Scobey, MT); Agnes (Long Beach, CA); May (Montana).
Richard spent his life on the farm, attending rural schools, graduated from Business College in Austin in 1908, followed by a residence on a Minnesota farm. In 1910, he went to Sask. where he was a clerk at implement stores. In 1912, he started an automobile livery service at Scobey, MT. He erected the Motor Inn and continued in the garage and automobile sales handling the Oakland and Reo cars. He sold out in 1916 and devoted his practice to the oil business.
In Jan 1917, Kellogg, MN, Richard married Miss Gertrude McNallan, born in Kellogg, 1889, daughter of John and Bridget (Costello) McNallan. Gertrude was a teachern north of Scobey. Coughlin children: John Dennis, Helen Gertrude.
