Lila,
The Jeremiah Couch line of Virginia goes back
to 1739. I'm not sure where the Couch's of 1640 come in to this line if they do at all.
I found notations of a Thomas Couch in VA that was a ship master in the LATE 1600's.
He was ship master of "The Fortune", and "The Palm Tree". So the Couch's have been in the Americas far before 1801. I would think that
they are from the same family in some way shape or form but the name Couch is pretty common in Cornwall(so I've been told anyway)
I'm sure there is a common ancestry somewhere in Cornwall but I've hit a brick wall there.

Good luck in your hunt. I've been having a blast researching my Couch line!

Diane
