"Will dated 25th March 1845 Pr To Baptist Church- 1 Acre and spring. 1 Acre for graveyard ,for the public forever. If Church fails- land reverts to son, Peter. To Son Peter 630 Acres, stock and money including windmill. The rest he had already given. Witness: George Kenny , Harvey Hale

By this, it would appear that John Sr., still owned quite a bit of land at the time of his death that included the land where the cemetery is located. In the Greene Co. courthouse are several transaction records of John's sale of land to his other sons, before his death, obviously, that involve hundreds of acres. These are the usual "one dollar and love and affection types" and are 8 x 14, handwritten, of course, and are very detailed, describing trees, bushes, creeks and, probably, squirrel nests. lol I lost my copies years ago in a move, but, I'm sure they are still in the courthouse.

In the description of the six acres Wm. West purchased from George Couch: "George Couch hath granted, bargained, sold and by these presents doth Grant, Bargain, Sell, Release and confirm unto the said William West his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of Land Lying and situate in the county aforesaid on the north side of Bays Mountain on Big Gap Creek beginning at a white oak stump Hickory on the banks of said creek then northwest 46 degrees - sixty three poles to a stake then south forty poles to a stake then east forty six poles to the beginning containing by estimation six acres"

Standing in the cemetery, looking west, you see Bays Mountain. Correct?

The traansaction from John to William West is, also, on the north side of Bays and along the creek. It seems to be an extension of the six acre piece.

Land located on the north side, of Bays, northwest along the creek, would take the land some distance from the cemetery.
