My great grandmother was Esther Cottrell Lane Mayes. She was from Big Otter (Clay Co.)WV. She still has family living on the farm she said she was born on. You may try to contact them about more information on the Cottrell's there. My great-grandmother was married to Willie Lane and had 6 children by him before his death in the 1920's. Then she remarried Lehman Mayes. My grandmother is Addie Maysel Lane and she married R. Roscoe Workman. She still lives in Fola (Clay Co.) WV. Grandma Mayes use to say her grandfather was part indian and he fought in the Civil War. He made all the family swear never to go against the Union again. She did have pictures of her grandfather, a group family portart with several relatives standing around an older man with a long white beard, who she said was her grandfather. She also had a picture of his mother. If you would like more information you may try to contact some of the Lane family in Fola (Clay Co.) WV. The Clay County High School also published a geneology book of many of the families in Clay County WV and these names are also listed there. You could contact the school to see if there are any more books available. The teacher who helped get the project started was Jerry Stover. Hope this was of some help.
