The following is from a book called "A History of Gallia County, Ohio" and it was submitted by Isabel Boggs and Joan Passen. I am not sure that their Cottrells fit in with mine but if their version is correct then they probably do not.
"The original Cottrell family immigrated to Virginia from England in 1726. Edward Cottrell married a DeHart. Their children were William, David, Edward, George, Elija, and James. (I have not been able to find a James and I became interested in this family because of my James Cotteral who moved to Ross and Pike County, Ohio by 1819).
The next generation we learn that Edward Cottrell married Rhoda Langford. They had the following Children: Nancy, m. David Lasley b. 20 Sep 1807 d. 28 Feb 1874; Robert b. 4 Feb 1809, d. 7 Mar 1855; Katherine b. 16 Aug 1810, d. 3 Sep 1852; Theodotia m. James lasley b. 1 Sept 1812, d. 1 Jan 1848; Thomas b. 13 May 1813 d. 30 Sep 1814; Julia Ann, b. 6 oct 1815, d. 8 Nov 1840; Elizab. Dec 1817, d. 1 Sep 1852, Emilyb 17 July 1820, d. 30 Jan 1853; Silas b. 21 Sep 1823, d. 7 April 1824; Joel m. Mary Patterson b. 12 Sept 1825 d. 25 Aug 1901; Mary Jane b. 28 Jan 1829 d. 8 Feb 1829; Clerinda, m. George Serrier, b. 19 Dec 1830, d. 20 Jan 1901; Asa b. 2 Jun 1833.
There is more listed through the descendants of Joel and Mary Patterson Cottrell.
