Hi Donna,
This is not my Cottrell line, mine is from Virginia.
But I checked for your Philip in the Social Security index at Ancestry.com.
The only one who died in 1976 was issued his social security card in Missouri before 1951. It says he was born September 20, 1921. And as you probably already know, died in New Jersey.
Do you know his wife's name?
Social Security is a good place to start for more modern relatives.
