John Cottrell was born in 1743, in Bedford, or Amherst County, VA. His father was Thomas Cottrell, born in 1711 in New Kent County Va. His mother was Susannah Pattison, born in 1715, also in VA. She died in Bedford in 1734. These Cottrells all descend from Thomas Cottrell, who came to Virginia in 1650.
