The Name and Family of Cottrell

The following is of interest of all doing COTTRELL family research. I found this article in the Garnet A. Wilson Library in Pike County Ohio. The title "THE NAME AND FAMILY OF COTTRELL" Compiled by The Media Research Bureau, Washington, D.C.

According to some family historians, the name of COTTRELL is of ancient Norman derivation, but others maintain that the name was originally used in England in the form of COTTEREL and refered to "an inferior tenant, probably holding in absolute villenage". It is found on ancient British and early American records in the various forms of COTTREL,COTTEREL,COTEREL,COTREL,COTRELL,COTERELL,COTERELLE,COTTRILL,COTTERILL,COTRILL,COTTERIL,COTERIL,COTTERALL,COTTRALL,COTERILL,COTTERELL,COTTRELL,and others of which the last spelling is that most generally accepted in America today, while that immediately preceding it is also frequently used.

Families bearing this name were to be found at early dates in the English Counties of Devon, Derby, Somerset, York, Middlesex, Cambridge, Norfolk, Hereford, and Bedford, as well as in various parts of Ireland and in the city and vicinity of London. These families were, for the most part, of landed gebtry and yoemanry of the British Isles.

Tradition asserts that at least one line of the family traces its descent from "COTTRELL the Norman", Whose ancestors were settled anciently in Flanders. He appears to have received lands at Taddington and Priestcliff, in Derbyshire, about the time of William the Conqueror and the Norman Conquest of England. This COTTRELL was the father of John COTTRELL, the father of a son named Ralph. The records of this line are only fragmentary, but it is known that in 1357 one John COTTRELL, of this line, was Comptroller of the Kings works.( There is about 2 more pages Concerning early COTTRELL names in the British Isles and early immigrants to USA. The dates in Britain range from 1273 to 1585.
However, there aren't many a dozen or so.)

I think the Norman Conquest of England was abt 1066 and that many COTTRELL/COTEREL men came across the English Channel from Normandy, France and then to the rest of the world.

I am a descendant of James Coterel(plug in what is best for you), father of Harrison Tyree Coterel. They appear to connect to the posted message by Richard Cottrell on this page. My family webpage is located at www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/o/t/Darel-J-Coterel
