I Have a copy of a bible record (you can download it from the Library of Virginia Webpage on rootsweb) that has an Able Cottrell b Jan 5, 1790 the son of Peter Cottrell and Susanna Sheppard. From what I can make out they had a total of 8 Children
Richard b Oct 26, 1779
Samuel b June 7, 1781
Peter b Feb 25, 1783
William b June 13, 1785
Elizabeth b May 23, 1787
Reuben b Apr 4, 1792
Joseph Sheppard Cottrell b Aug 13, 1795

Peter had a second wife. Also this information is posted below by Richard Cottrell
