In my family the origins of Cottrell are a variation of the spelling of Cockrell that can be found in Virginia and Maryland. One of the sons of my Simon Cockrell purchased a piece of land 1794 in Lee County, Virginia name Moses Cockrell and sold it in 1795 name Moses Cottrell. Hence the Cottrell line having origins in the name Cockrell. We believe it sounds the same if you think about it. The descendants of Moses Cockrell went into Tennessee and used the spelling Cottrell.
