One reason I believe establishing Foster as being Sarah's maiden name is the fact that an Isaac Foster filed an affidavit on the behalf of James Cotrell/Coterel (b. 14 Oct 1748) during his Rev War pension application.
It is possible that Sarah Foster was related to this Isaac Foster and it would explain how he came to know James Cottrell well enough to testify for him as James Cottrell (1748) was Ben Cottrell's grandfather, etc.
Also, Isaac Foster did live near Daniel Elizabeth Cottrell McCann. Elizabeth Cottrell was James Cottrell's (b. 1748) daughter.
