DESPARATING SEEKING

I have been seriously attempting to find out about my fathers family since 1999. My father was William Henry Cottrell who was sent to Canada as a British Home Child in 1914. His father was known as Frederick Cottrill/Cotterell/Cottrell, but on various documents he is also called James or William. According to the British 1891 census, my grandfather was born in Bexley Heath, Kent. However, he was in the army at the time, so I cannot place him with his family. His date of birth on different documents date from 1855 to 1870 and I cannot find any record of his birth. The only possible lead I have is a family living in Bexley Heath in 1891 with the surname Cotterell who have a son who was born in the States. Someone out there must be from the same family. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks for any advise.
Leslee
