Richard,

I got the information from Stella Cotrill off of this website (Genealogy Forum). There are some parts that seem really grey to me, and even she admits it may not be 100% accurate. If I follow this correctly the paternal line is:

1. Richard Cottrell
2. Thomas Cottrell
3. Thomas Cottrell
5. John L. Cottrell
10. Daniel Cottrell
20. Asher R. Cottrell
38. John W. Cottrell (my great grandfather)

Let me know what you think. I concider you the expert on Cottrell genealogy, and have admired your work for years, so I truly value your opinion. I have cut and pasted Stella's ancestor chart that I used for this research:

Notes for JAMES COTTRILL,JR.:
James Cotteral is noted in "A History of Ross and Highland Counties" as being a resident of
Franklin Township in Ross County, Ohio in 1819. This area today would be Richmondale, Ohio.
This information was written down by Amanda Higby while keeping a record of the area's residents.
It is not known if James was there prior to 1819 or if that is the year he arrived in Ross County.

The 1820 Census of Jackson Township in Pike County, Ohio lists James Cottrel's household as having 4 free white males. 1 under 10, 1 of 10 and under 16, 1 of 16 and under 26, and 1 of 45 and up.
This would indicate that he had three sons and he was at least 45 years old in 1820.
Also, the 1820 census lists 7 free white females. 1 under 10, 2 of 10 and under 16, 3 of 16 and under 26, and 1 of 26 and under 45. This would indicate he had 6 daughters and his wife was 26 to 45 years old.
Finally, this record indicates 3 foreigners not naturalized.
This could indicate that James and his wife along with their oldest child are the original immigrants of the Coterel line. Since their oldest child is under 26 years old, it is possible they immigrated to the United States circa 1795.
However, the 1880 census lists Harrison Coterell's mother's and father's place of birth as being
North Carolina and there is a James Cottral on the 1800 census index of North Carolina.

The 1830 Census of Jackson Township in Pike County lists James Cotterel and Benjamin Cotterel.
Benjamin is of 30 and under 40 years old. He is in the same age group as James' oldest son and is
more than likely his son. The 1830 census for James Cotterel still lists 1 free white male of 15 and under 20 and lists his age as being of 60 and under 70. Also, there is 1 free white female of 15 and under 20 and 1 free white female of 40 and under 50. This indicates that he has a son and a daughter living with him and his wife. It is possible that his other son might have perished in the prior 10 years and that that his other 5 daughters have married or passed away. There are no other Coterel variants listed in the census for Pike or Ross Counties.

The 1840 census of Jackson Township in Pike County, Ohio lists both Benjamin and James Cottrel.
By this time James is 70 and under 80 and his wife is 60 and under 70.
A Tyra Cottrel appears 10 names after theirs and he is 20 and under 30.
This would be consistent with the age of James' youngest son. One complication occurs on this census.
Lewis Cotterel appears on the page before James, Benjamin, and Tyra.
He is 30 and under 40 and that would put him in the same age group as James' middle son.
However, one would have to ask why he is not on the 1830 cesus.

According to the book "Amherst County, Virginia, in the Revolution" on June 9, 1841 in Pike County Ohio, a James Cotrell applied for Revolutionary War Pension. He claimed he was born on Oct 14, 1748. Also, he claimed he served in the summer of 1776 as a private under Capt. Sale to guard deserters from Amherst Court House to Williamsburg and that he was discharged after 6 weeks; then Sept 1,1777 he served 1 month under Capt John Dawson and Col Taylor; Jan 1781 under Capt Richard Ballenger, Lt Thomas Jones, John Mathews, Ensign; Vol 1782 under Capt John Sale. His claim was rejected as he failed to furnish proof of 6 months of service.
The following is a pension claim for the Revolutionary War filed by James Cotrell of the

Their 3 oldest children have the same names and ages as Tyra and Mary Cottterill's. However, Harrison's and Mary's ages are not the same as Tyra's and Mary's ages. Harrison has gained 5 years and Mary lost 4 years.
In actuality, Harrison is probably 48 and Mary is probably 44 Harrison and Mary along with their children are listed as being born in Ohio.

The 1870 census of Franklin Township has some new additions to the family Nancy H. (12) who I think is actually Hester and Amanda (8). Also, George W. (4) and Hibert (2 mos.).
It turns out that George and Hibert are actually the sons of Harman and Arminda, but they would appear to be Harrison and Mary's sons.
Harrison is listed as being 75 and Mary 59 but this is incorrect, they are actually more like 58 and 54. Harman(23) and Arminda(19) are shown together for the first time.
Also, Robert (23) is married to Hertew A (24). There is a conflict with the age of Harman is about 2 years older than Robert. If Mary is 54 and her daughter, Amanda is 8, she would have given birth to her at the age of 46 and not 51. In either case, she was pretty old to have been bearing children.
By the time the 1880 Census was taken Harrison's family had moved to Jackson Township in Jackson County, Ohio.
Harrison is living with Harman and Arminda and it appears that Mary has passed away. On this Census it has Harrison listed as 74 years old. He is probably closer to 68 than 74 unless earlier census records are incorrect about his age. It also states that he was born in Ohio and that his mother and father were born in North Carolina. However, Robert claimed his father was born in Virginia.
Pike County marriage records list a Harris, Tyree Cotrell m. MAry James in September 1832.
Harris is probably Harrison and the record should state Harrison Tyree Cotrell.

She was born May 10, 1850 in Pike County, Ohio, and died April 4, 1928 in Omega, Jackson Township, Pike County, Ohio.
Notes for HARMON COTTRILL:
******************
Death: 21 Jan 1906 in Richmondale, Ross County, Ohio of Consumption (pulmonary tuberculosis)
******************
Harman is 14 on the 1860 census of Franklin Township, Ross County Ohio and is the son of Harrison Cottrell.
******************
In 1870 he is married to Arminda and listed as a farmhand they have 2 children at the time
George W. (4) and Hibert (2 mos.) who appear on the census as sons of Harrison and Mary.
******************
By 1880 Harman spelled Hiram are living in Jackson Township, Jackson County Ohio.
The 1880 census index spells their name Cotwell. The census taker had poor handwriting skills and
the spelling could be interpreted as Coterell or Cottrell. At this time Harman and Arminda have
4 children, 3 sons, George (14), Hibert (9), and Albert (7), 1 daughter, Mary (5).
This census claims that Arminda does not know where her father was born and that her mother is from Ohio.
******************
The 1890 census was destroyed by a fire.
******************
The 1900 census of Jackson Township in Pike County Ohio Show Harman spelled Hiram and Arminda Cotrill
and they have 5 children living with them, 3 sons Lonzo (b. Jan 1883 17 years old),
Charley (b. Feb 1885 15 years old), and Amsey (b. March 1889 11 years old), 2 daughters
Viola (b. March 1882 18 years old) and Emily (b. Apr 1894 6 years old).
Their son Hibert is listed right after them on the census.
This census has Harman (b. March 1844 56 years old) and Arminda (b. Jan 1850 50 years old).
It also states that they have been married for 34 years and that Arminda is the mother of
14 children of which 8 are living. Also, it states that Harman and Arminda's parents are all from Ohio
******************
However, the 1910 census states that Arminda had 14 children of which 9 were still living.
It also shows that Harman was dead before May 4, 1910

Marriage 1 Arminda VANSCOY b: 10 May 1850 in Ohio
Married: 21 Jul 1866 in Pike County, Ohio
The index for Pike County Marriages for the years 1815 thru 1915 have Harmon Cotterell married Arminda Kinnison
on 21 Jul 1866.
The parents names given for Emma Coteral were Hiram & Armina (Vansky) Coteral on 5 Jan 1915, for
Amizia Coterel were Hiram & Stella (Vanscoy) on 21 Mar 1912, for Charles Franklin Coterel were
Hiram & Arminda (Vansky) Coterel on 28 Feb 1912, and for Viola Cotterell were
Harmon & Lizzie (-------) Cotterell on 17 Aug 1900.
The records are consistent for Arminda's surname of Vansky when it comes to her children.
However, I have not been able to find a Vansky/Vanscoy family with a daughter "Arminda".
Her name could be Elizabeth Arminda or Stella Arminda and it could be that her maiden name
was Kinnison not Vansky.
******************
There is a marriage between Elizabeth Vanscoy and Samuel Kinnison in Jackson County, Ohio in 1856.
Then Samuel and Elizabeth Kinnison appear on the 1860 census for Pike County, Ohio with a 5 year old
daughter Arminda. If her age is correct then she would have been 11 when she married Harmon.
She is listed as 19 in 1870 and her death certificate claims she was born in 1850.
It appears that Elizabeth was originally married to one of the Jacson County Vanscoys and that
Arminda is a child of her first marriage.

Notes for ARMINDA VANSCOY,LOBAR PNEUMONIA:
Arminda could read and write. Her maiden name was given to me by Diana Irene Coterel.

She was born May 11, 1880 in Jackson County, Ohio.
Notes for HILBERT C. COTTRILL:
Hibert first appears on the 1870 census of Franklin Township in Ross County Ohio as a son of Harrison Cottrel.
But as it turns out Hibert is actually the 2 month old son of Harman and Arminda (Vansky) Cottrel. The 1880 census shows Hibert as a 9 year old son of Harman and Arminda Coterel spelled Cotwell On the 1900 Census his name is spelled Hibert Cotrill. He is married to Elizabeth and they have 3 children, 2 sons, Oscar (b. July 1893 6 years old) and Basil (b. May 1899 1 year old), 1 daughter, Floyd (b. Dec 1895 4 years old). As it turns out, Floyd is actually another son. Hibert (b. March 1870 30 years old) and Elizabeth (b. Apr 1876 24 years old)

On the 1910 Census his name is spelled Harbert Cotterell. He is married to Elizabeth and they
have 6 children, 4 sons, Oscar (15), Floyd (13), Willard (10), and Virgil (8), 2 daughters Agnes (5) and Elva (NA). Hibe is 40 and Elizabeth is 33 years old.

In the 1920 Census his name is spelled Hibert Cottrell.
Oscar is no longer on the census because he was killed in WWI. Hibert and Elizabeth now have 9 children living with them, 5 sons, Floyd D. (22), Willard B. (20), Virgle E. (18), Wilbert M. (6) and Delbert G. (2-2mos.), 4 daughters Agnes M. (15), Elva M. (12), Nora E. (10), and Dorise G. (4-8mos.). This is where I derived the middle names of Ethel Nora, Marion Wilbert, and Glenn Delbert. In 1920, according to the U.S. Census, Hibe owned his house free of mortgage and was a general farmer.
The Census was taken Jan. 17-20, 1920.

According to his obituary he died Thursday March 30, 1950 in Portsmouth General Hospital where he had been a patient for one day following several weeks of illness. He was a member of Germany Church near Richmondale. The funeral services were held at Germany Church and the burial followed in the Church Cemetery under the direction of Harold A. Eagon, local funeral director. Friends called at the residence until time for the final rites. His name was spelled Hibert Coterel in his Obituary. Also, in the obituary Marion Coteral was the only male not spelling his name Coterel. Tombstone in German Chapel Cemetery has name spelled Cotteral.

ALBERT COTTRELL KILLED BY TRAIN
Death came almost instantly to Albert Cottrell, 77, retired farm laborer of near Higby, about 1:40 AM this morning when he was struck by a N&W fast freight one-half mile east of Omega.
Charles Ross, the engineer, said that he noticed an object he thought to be a man step on the track in the path of the engine just before the train struck him on the straight-away.
Sheriff Jesse H. Foster, Deputy Sheriff Ralph Davis and Pike County Coroner Dr. Mack Moore investigated. Sheriff Foster said the man's body was hurled through the air a distance of 27 feet, landing on the other track, his head being crushed by a railroad tie. Dr. Moore said the crushed head was responsible for the accidental death. Although, practically every bone in his body was broken. Engineer Ross said the west bound train was going about 50 miles per hour.
No papers of identification were found on the body by the officers. Coroner Moore said the man had two small change purses, in different pockets. One contained a book of matches and a shoestring, the other had $4.50 in change.
The body was brought to the A. H. Boyer Funeral Home pending identification and final arrangements. His body was identified as the father of Wayne Cottrell of Higby Station, who missed hid father and came to the funeral home early in the morning.
According to his obituary, funeral services were held on Saturday at 2:00 PM from Allen Chapel
at Mt. Sinai. Burial followed in Allen Cemetery under the direction of A.H. Boyer, local funeral director.
Friends called at the home of Warren Cottrell until the time of final rites.
