I have some Cottrells from Rhode Island who are probably same family. John born 1681/82 in Rhode Island, son John b. 1713 in RI married Elizabeth Gardiner. Had sons John b. March 12, 1744 or 45 in RI(I have nothing more on him. His brother Lebbeus b. 1755 in RI and married Sarah Phillips had son Gardiner b. 1778, other sons Benjamin, William, Pardon and Lebbeus. This Lebbeus born abt. 1791 in Petersburg, Rensselaer Co, NY so family moved to NY from RI by 1791.
With the John's and then the one named Gardiner, I figure it must be the same family group.
