Joseph died before 1870 probably in Indiana. Mary (listed as widow)and her son by Joseph, Charles Ellsworth Cottrell, are in Tippecanoe Co., IN on the 1870 census. Her daughter from her first marriage, Nancy Williamson Linscott, and family are also in Tippecanoe in 1870. I have no proof but have a hunch Joseph did not die in Carroll Co., IN. Mary and Joseph placed a tombstone on her son James's grave in 1864 and it still exists. She was far from destitute and it is my belief she would have buried Joseph near her son and placed a stone on his grave also if they still resided in Carroll Co. I did not check the cemeteries myself but a Carroll Co., IN resident checked them for me back in the 1980s.
Mary shows up in KS in 1874 or 75 when she was involved in a land transaction which took place in Cowley Co., KS but is listed as living in Neosho Co., KS at the time of the deed. Both Mary and son (listed as Ellsworth) are in Neosho on the 1875 state census in KS. Neither can be located in 1880 although there are some Charles Cottrells in the 1880 census in other areas, none can possitively be identified as Joseph's son at this point.
I believe my great-grandfather Charles A. Fuller may have been named after Charles Cottrell. There is no other record of a Charles in our lineage.
I was glad to see a Missouri association with this family. The 1875 KS state census listed birth location and "came from" locations for all censused. Mary Cottrell's daughter and children are listed as being born in IN but coming from MO. It's possible they stayed with relatives while a residence was being built in KS. I have always hoped to find descendents of Charles Ellsworht Cottrell or other relations who may have heard stories, or received letters from my line. They history is quite colorful but there are many questions the family hopes to someday find answers to. Thank you for the new lead.
