I'll bet my wife's grandfather, Elias B. Cottrell's middle name was Burdick. He was s/o William Franklin Cottrell[c1804-1876] & Margaret Ellington. The 1860 census of New Oregon Twp, Howard Co.,IA notes Wm. F. was 56 years old & Rachel, his second wife was 55.Residing with the family are Isaac F Cottrell, 18; Elias B.(he was b. in Funks Grove, IL in 1849); Simon Hughes, 20 & Joseph, 79 & Margaret, 78 Rogers, both b. in TN. Does anyone recognize Hughes & Rogers?
I was researching my Davis line when I found Elias Cotrell and Mary Maxson marriage. The Davis & Maxson folks I believe were followers of William Davis and his group of Seventh Day Baptists who settled in New Salem, VA now Salem , Harrison Co., WV.
I suspect that Elias B. Cottrell was named after Elias Burdick who m. Elizabeth Cotrell, d/o John & Elizabeth (Gardner) Cottrell, on 23 Jan 1764.Hope someone can help fill in the blank of the lost generation from 1764 to 1804.
