Hi! Yes, the first name Hayes is pretty rare. However, in the county (Pickens) in Alabama in which I grew up, it is pretty common. [Hayes Gore, Hayse Moorhead, Dr. Hayes Comerford, just to name a few off the top of my head.) I have also come across another "Hayes Lowe" (in Ky.) while doing genealogical research on the internet.

All the Hayes' that I know of are male (including me), but I don't think that means much. It seems to be a last name made into a given name, so it could be used either way.
