NC/VA Cotton slave owners?

Please respond. Need to trace our family origins. Have been only able to document our family to 1880. Have also found African-American Cotton Civil War veterans served in Union Army living in Greene County, NC. Also found white Cotton family living in Greene County that had moved from Virginia and they were slave owners. Would like to make the connection if there is one... but will need documentation probably in possession of white Cotton tax records, wills, ect stating names of slaves held in ownership at that time. Any help appreciated.
