I just rec. in the mail today a booklet called "DEVIL IN PETTICOATS" written in 1823 by Parson Mason Locke Weems, a traveling preacher. He frequented Edgefield County, selling Bibles as well. I obtained this for $2.00 from the Old Edgefield District Gen. Soc., P.O. Box 546, 104 Courthouse Square, Edgefield, SC 29824-0546 (803) 637-4010. Tonya Taylor is the one you want to communicate with (via snail mail or phone). She is busy researching Rebecca and says she has found some very interesting info. Apparently John Cotton was married previously to his marriage to Rebecca. His first wife is not known at this time, but apparently had several children from the first marriage. She is going to keep me updated on what she finds out about John & Rebecca. I am hoping to connect my ancestor CHARLES COTTON b. 20 Jan 1785 in SC, to the Edgefield Cotton family. Tonya has hinted that perhaps my CHARLES is a product of the first marriage. You might want to contact Tonya for your copy of this fascinatig tale.
