Children of John Weaver COTTON & Mariah

John Weaver COTTON, born 1831 near Grantville, Coweta County, GA. Eldest
son and third of six children of Cary and Hannah(BATES) COTTON and grandson of Weaver and Rachel COTTON. Weaver COTTON migrated to Wilkes Co., GA, from Sussex Co., VA, ca 1790. His son, Cary, born May 30, 1802, was raised in Wilkes Co., GA, in neighborhood of Kettle Creek. He married there on 1/27/1825,
then moved to Coweta County, GA, prior to 1830. On 2/7/1850, in Coweta County, John Weaver COTTON married his half-first cousin,
Maria HINDSMAN, daughter of William and Nancy (COTTON) HINDSMAN. Nancy was a half-sister of Cary COTTON, born to Weaver COTTON and his second wife, Sally (BENNETT) EVANS.
In early 1850s, Cary COTTON and family moved to Coosa Co., AL,.followed in 1853 by son John and families of two married daughters (Mary Ann COTTON SMITH, wife of James Washington SMITH and Rachel FULMER, wife of John W. FULMER) who preceded John in marrying in Coweta County. John Weaver COTTON died at home in Coosa Co., AL, in Dec., 1866 at 35 years old, of complications from measles he contracted as a prisoner after the battle of Bentonville, NC. Mariah HINDSMAN COTTON later remarried. His Civil War letters to wife Mariah are published in the book "Yours Till the Death."

John and Mariah's 8 children:

1. Ann Texas COTTON b. Dec. 16, 1850, Coweta County, GA, m. Willis BURKS, 1872,
Coosa County.
2. John Michael ("Bud") COTTON, b. March 30, 1855, Coosa County. m. second
cousin, Sarah Frances WEBB, daughter of Calloway Monroe and Sophia
(EVANS) WEBB, lived in Coweta County, GA.
3. William Cary ("Bunk") COTTON b. April 21, 1856, Coosa County. m. Annie Elizabetth CARLISLE, daughter of John Bunyan and Nancy (CRADDOCK) CARLISLE of Mt. Olive, Jan. 29, 1878. They had two sons before William
was killed accidentally August 19, 1884. Buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Widow remarried - moved to Texas.
4. Jefferson Davis ("Bake") COTTON, b. March 11, 1859, Coosa County. m. second cousin, Nancy R. (Nannie) WEBB, daughter of Calloway Monroe and Sophia (EVANS) WEBB, lived in Coweta County, GA. Nancy and Sarah Frances WEBB (wife of John M. COTTON above) were sisters.
5. Andrew C.L.T.("Sweet") COTTON, b. April 22, 1860, Coosa County. Died Feb.28,
1876, 2 months before 16th birthday.
6. Virginia Francinia ("Ginny") COTTON, born December 18, 1861, m. John C. ("Johnny") MONK, son of John Samuel and Louisa Serepta (CARLISLE) MONK, Nov. 11, 1877, Coosa County. Johnny MONK and Annie CARLISLE, wife of
William C. COTTON (above) were first cousins. Johnny and Ginny MONK moved to Marshall Co., AL.
7. James Weaver COTTON, born April 28, 1864, Coosa County, m. Bethenia Virginia ("Jennie") WHITE, daughter of Brinson Ross and Lucy Ann (CARLISLE) WHITE Nov. 20, 1884, Coosa County. This family moved to Texas c. 1893/94. Jennie WHITE was another first cousin of Johnny MONK and Annie CARLISLE.
