James Cotton 10/20/09
These are two different families.
James Cotton of Anson County, NC was the son of Leonard Cotton and the grandson of Rev. Thomas Cotton of London. He married a woman named Margaret and had three children - Thomas, James Jr. and Priscilla. The elder James was a colonel in the British army during the Revolution and after the war fled the country. He remarried to Anne Hall and had two or three more children. He died in Jamaica. His lands in North Carolina were awarded to his sons Thomas and James Jr. They continued to live in Montgomery Co., NC. One of Thomas's descendants is in our DNA project (see family 4).
James Cotton of Guilford Co., NC was a soldier in the Continental army during the Revolution. His family's origins are still unknown though it was stated that they had lived in Virginia. This is the James who moved to Tennessee and Alabama and was the father of Peter J. Cotton. The only other relative of James that I know of was his uncle William Cotton. William also served in the Revolution and filed a pension application. He moved to South Carolina and died in Indiana. One of his descendants also belongs to the DNA project (see family 34).
