Cotton Family Genealogy Forum

Hello William: I'm descended from John Cotton b. 1721 in Stafford County, Va. died 1808 in Nelson County, Kentucky. He was married to Susannah Smith 17 February 1743 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co,Va. His father was a Ralph Cotton, s/o John Cotton & Susannah Smith, d/o Nathaniel Smith. Since Prince George and Stafford and then Fairfax Counties are neighbors, and the connection of both your William and my John to the Smith families, there has to be a connection. We have been trying to find it, but due to the destructon of Court House Records in those counties during the Civil War, it is extremely difficult to find those records. The father and grandfather of my John were found through Deed Records. Do you have William's Cotton' Will Record. If so would be pleased to receive a copy of same. John's grandfather John was married to an Elizabeth Smith, d/o Ralph Smith and he said in a deed that he was the only son of his daughter Elizabeth who had intermarried with John Cotton. She must have died young as well as our John's father Ralph. But surely the old grandfather John had more than one marriage, and more than one child. Our John had two marriags and 22 children. So is your William one of grandfather John's children? Believe if we work together we can probably put this family completely together. Let's hear from you, will cooperate in this endeavor. Margaret Cotton Spiry and Al Spiry.
