I am not a direct descendant of this line but of another branch of the same Cotton family. However I understand from some who have done research on these Cottons that Arthur did not really have the middle name Kemp. His son Johial married a Mary Ann Kemp and had a son Sterling Kemp Cotton. The name Kemp was mistakenly attached to Arthur in some genealogy and has continued to be passed on incorrectly from researcher to researcher. As far as I know, there is no document which would suggest a middle name for Arthur.

Arthur was the son of Cullen Cotton (d. abt. 1811, Edgefield Co., SC) and Helen Moore
Cullen was the son of Arthur Cotton (d. 1789, Hertford Co., NC) and Elizabeth Rutland
Arthur was the son of John Cotton (d. 1728, Bertie Co., NC) and Martha Godwin
