Morris, I have found Joshua W. Cotton in the 1850 Fayette Co., PA Census. He went by the name of Joshua Whitecotton. I also found in the 1850 Mortality Schedule a John Whitecotton who is undoubtedly the son of Joshua and Phebe: Home in 1850: Perry, Fayette, Pennsylvania William Bell 76, MD, Farmer Lydia Bell 62, NJ Joshua Whitecotton 26, PA, Farmer Phebe Whitecotton 23, PA (Note that a Lidia Ball, age 73, was residing with Joshua in the 1860 census in my previous post) There are no Whitecotton listed in the 1840 Fayette Co.,PA census. However, William Bell is listed in the 1840 Fayette Co., PA census: 1840 United States Federal Census Name: William Bell Township: Perry, County: Fayette, State: Pennsylvania Males: 15-20=1, 60-70=1, Females: 50-60=1 -- U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1880 Name: John Whitecotton, Gender: Male, Place of Birth: Pennsylvania, Estimated Birth Year: abt 1849, Age: 1, Month of Death: Jany 13th Cause Of Death: In Of Brain, Census Year: 1850 Census Location: (City, County, State), Perry, Fayette, Pennsylvania Page: 67, Line: 21, Roll: M1838_3 (Note: For deaths ending June 1, 1850) There is a Harris Whitecotton and Meliah Whitecotton residing in 1810 in Fayette Co., PA. In 1820 a Margaret Whitecotton is residing in Fayette Co., PA. You might want to check out the message board at Ancestry.com regarding these Whitecottons of Pennsylvania. I believe that a Frankcotton62 is a relative of yours: http://boards.ancestry.com.au/surnames.whitecotton/176/mb.ashx Joshua's wife, Phebe, was a Rossell. She had a brother, John Alonzo Rossell, who resided in Michigan. This is probably why Phebe Cotton went to Michigan after the death of Joshua in Kansas. Sarah Jane Cotton, daughter of Joshua, married her cousin, Celsus Rossell, son of Phebe's brother, John Alonzo Rossell. Hope this helps you with your research. Jean (Tarbell) Cotton Notify Administrator about this message?
