Lynda,
My husband's Cotton family was also from Noxubee Co., MS so I am somewhat familiar with the J. B. Cotton you mention.
Your ancestor was John Buford Cotton, son of Nicholas Cotton and Phebe Willbanks/Willbank.Nicholas Cotton also married 2nd Leona Willbanks.
J. B. Cotton's son is listed as John B. Cotton, Jr. in the 1900 Noxubee Co., MS census. On his WWI Draft Registration Card he is listed as John Buford Cotton so I am assuming that this was also his father's name.
You wrote that you cannot locate Miss M. A. Davis' parentage and thought that someway she was related to the Warren Smith Wilanks she was residing with in the 1860 census.
Home in 1860: District 5, Noxubee, Mississippi
W S Willbanks, age 67, SC
Elizabeth C Willbanks, age 45, KY
Thos A Willbanks, age 26, AL
Mary Ann Davis, age 11, TN
The 1870 census shows that John and Mary (Davis) Cotton are residing next to Warren Willbanks and wife Elizabeth. This seems to indicate that Warren Willbanks was the 'Farmer' and John Cotton was the 'Overseer' of that farm.
Home in 1870: Township 16, Noxubee, Mississippi
254, 251
Warren Willbank, age 79, Farmer, SC
Elizabeth Willbank, age 58, KY
255, 252
John Cotton, age 22, Overseer, MS
Mary Cotton, age 22, MS
You will notice that there is a 21 year difference in age between Elizabeth and Warren Willbanks in the 1870 census.
In 1850 Warren Willbanks is a widow:
Home in 1850: Noxubee, Mississippi
Warrin Wilbanks, age 58, SC
Thomas Wilbanks, age 16, SC
Sarah R Wilbanks, age 13, SC
This would indicate that Warren Wilbanks married 2nd Elizabeth between 1850 and 1860. I would suggest that your Mary Ann Davis was the daughter of Elizabeth from a previous marriage.
Hope this helps you in researching in the right direction.
Jean Cotton
