Hi Michelle, thanks very much for responding. I was interested in JOHN COTTON & MARGARET GREEN of Stafford Co VA, because I am trying to verify or disprove the Whitecotton family legend which goes like this (italics mine): William Cotton b 1560 Devonshire England, m. Mary Hulme | Edward Cotton b abt 1586 Devonshire England, m. Margaret Petre | John Cotton b May 4, 1615, supposedly arrived at Jamestown Virginia aboard ship "George" ( I have yet to find him in any passenger lists), married Ann White, haad one son William White-Cotton. | William White-Cotton b abt 1636 Stafford Co VA (this is clearly incorrect because Stafford county VA was not formed from Westmoreland Co VA until 1664) m unknown Isham?? | Isham Whitecotton b abt 1660 VA m Ann Axton (widow of John Smith) verified--although I have not found records indicating that his first name was Isham | Mealy Whitecotton b abt 1688 m Sarah Foote (possibly widow of Arthur Bradshaw in England) verified through records. The problem I am having is that I can't seem to find John Cotton & Ann White in early VA records--and I have a great many ancestors who were at Jamestown, so this is baffling to me. They should be there. The Virginia colony was not a large place in the 1630s. I am beginning to suspect that the legend of the origin of the Whitecotton name in the US is just that--a legend. I have found records for Mealy Whitecotton, who inherited that land that was originally purchased from Henry Blagrave I by John Axton & Edward Cary. So I know he exists. It is noted in "Register of Overwharton Parish Stafford Co VA 1623-58" that Mealy was the son & heir of Ann Axton (Smith) Whitecotton. I wanted to thank you for posting the John Axton & Edward Cary court record/information on your website for Henry Blagrave I; because of your website,I was able to find all the records for the Axton/Cary/Blagrave land dispute, and have now transcribed & posted them on my own personal website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bettysboneyard/index.html If you can comment on any of the Cottons listed above, or have any other thoughts on the Cotton/Whitecotton connection, please let me know.
