Cotton – Lewis Families of Scottsboro, Al

The following was taken from Volume 3, historical Southern Families, John Bennett Bodie, 1959.

Ursule Allin, dau. Of Wm. Allin and his first wife Anne Owen, m. Gideon Johnson, Sr., of Rockingham, N. C. who made his will Oct. 7, 1807, which was probate there at the November Court. He served as a private in Capt. John Williams Co., 2nd Battalion, N. C. Troops. Of his children, Nancy (no. 7) born 1765, Guilford County., N. C. married Dec. 20, 1786, James Cotton, born Guilford Co., N. C. October 1765, died Feb. 18, 1838, McNairy County, Tn.
Children:
1. Peter Cotton, born December 25, 1787
2. Mary Cotton, born March 15, 1792, m. John McCartney
3. Martha Cotton, born May 19, 1796 (1791?C.S.) died November 22, 1852; m. (1) Ashworth (2) Samuel Barron
4. Tabitha Allen Cotton, born February 24(3? C.S.) 1801, Smith County, Tn. Died May 1, 1877, M. Sept 23, 1819 Henry Lewis, born in Kentucky, Sept 24, 1799, died January 4 1879 Woodville, Jackson County, Al.
Children:
1. Wiley Franklin Lewis
2. Grant Allen Lewis
3. Martha Caroline Lewis
4. Susan Levinda Lewis
5. Nancy Jane Lewis
6. Tabitha Francis Lewis born December 11, 1863, Huntland, Tn., died June 27th, 1910, Rutherford County, Tn., m. Feb 6, 1883 Jasper Newton Martin, of Bedford Co., Tn.
Children:
1. Olive Lewis Martin, born Franklin County, Tn., Nov 20, 1895, m. Robert Bascom McBride November 30, 1916

Note: The above James Cotton who married Nancy Johnson was a Revolutionary War Soldier and resided in old Decatur Co. that was later divided between Madison and Jackson Counties. Woodville was the county seat of Decatur County. James applied for his pension on Oct. 30, 1832, he being a resident of Madison County, Al. James Cotton was born in Guilford County, N. C. in October 1765 (from his pension record).
Obit of Edward Cotton(1) taken from the Progressive Age 1911. Given to the compiler by Miss Eunice Matthews, Scottsboro. Edward is believed to be the son of Peter Cotton, son of James the Revolutionary War Soldier. However, no evidence has been found to substantiate this.
“Edward Cotton, one of the old land marks of Jackson County passed peacefully away at his house in Larkinsville last Friday night at the ripe old age of 87 years and was buried in the Larkinsville Cemetery Sunday (no toombstone can be found- C.P.S.). Revs. W. S. Bridges and John C. Morris conducted the funeral. Mr. Cotton leaves 8 children, 37 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren to mourn his loss.

They are children : Mrs. Betty Snodgrass and Mrs. Mollie McCutchen of Scottsboro. Mrs Lou Hodges (sould be Higgins- C.P.S.) Annie, Fannie, Albert and Larkin Cotton of Larkinsville and Mrs. Maggie Brown of Aspel.

Grandchildren: children of Betsy Snodgrass are Mrs. Carrie Gross, John Snodgrass, Mrs. Maggie Parks, Elizabeth Snodgrass of Scottsbors, Mrs. Sallie Henderson and Ed Snodgrass of Larkins Landing.

Children of Mrs. Mollie McCutchen: Walker, Harrison, Elizabeth, Annie, Mrs. Pricilla Hambrick of Scottsboro, Mrs Annie Cahoon and George Lee McCutchen of Scottsboro.

Children of Mrs. Lou Higgins: Fannie Lee, Annis, Maggie and Robert Higgins of Larkinsville

Children of Albert H. Cotton: Annie Lee(m. Webb), Mary (never m.). Eileen (m. “Piggy” Watt – lived in Bridgeport, one dau. Mary. Hugh and Andy Cotton of Scottsboro.

Children of Jerry Cotton: A deceased son, Mrs. Mattie Berry, J.B. Cotton(m. Maud Robertson, dau of Nelson and Laura(Sims) Robertson), Wiley Cotton, Jr., James Larkin cotton of Larkinsville and Mrs. Julia Van Valkenburg of Nebraska and great grandchildren.
