My Cottons in nearby Effingham Co., IL

My Cotton family was living in Effingham Co., IL at time yours were in bordering Clay Co. Maybe they are of same branch. My ancestor Peter Cotton (b. Jan. 1837 IN-d. 1901 Effingham Co., IL) married Dorcas (Petty?) and had two daughters Rose and Jane. Sometime during his enlistment in the Civil War, (where he is single instead of married) he left Dorcas and (according to an article I have) he married Dorcas' sister Susan (my ancestor). Peter and Susan apparently moved to White Co., IL (though I can't find them in 1870 census anywhere). Their daughter Edith was my grandmother's mother, born 1874, and by 1880 they were in Effingham Co., IL. Edith had an older brother Charles Arthur and sister Dora. Another sister died as a child.

Any suggestions where Peter might be found in 1850 census? He would be with parents then. I haven't found him in any IN census yet.

Thanks!
