Cotton Family Genealogy Forum

The Cotten/on name was used for many geographically dispersed manors (perhaps as many as 10 or more) during the English middle ages. When people took surnames, their places of origins very often became the source of their names. In addition to this, it was a common practice for a man marrying an heiress of wealth to take her family name and pass it on to their children, this often being a condition for marriage. In other cases, property was passed on to individuals with other surnames, again with the condition that the grantee change his surname to that of the grantor.
It is commonsense that with a name as common as that of Cotten/on, we will come across many cases the existence of different, unrelated (in the male line), lineages which, when living in the same geographic area, will greatly complicate research into family origins. Last year, with the cooperation of three other individuals (of whom, one is no longer alive), I started a y-chromosome signature project of people having a male-line Cotten/on descent. It has already proved itself to be of great value to the participants and has the potential to greatly refine the nature of Cotten/on genealogical studies.
I need more volunteers who will undergo the necessary DNA testing and share their results with me for immediate inclusion in my website. For further information, please refer to my website at "http://family.nf". If you have any questions, please contact me either on this genealogy forum or at my e-mail address "hkitabayashi@yahoo.com". Thank you.
