Your brickwall is William of Strawbery Banke, not Sir Alan, Lord Mayor of London. Frank E. Cotton in the introduction to "The Cotton Family of Portsmouth, N.H." printed in the N.E. Register, 1904,1905, reprints are available from Higginson's, discusses this question. I have seen the ancestry of Sr Alan in English genealogy, [he was part of a large prominent family] but so far I have never seen anything that proves William of Strawbery Banke was his son. There are many genealogies out there that claim the relationship, but none that I've seen that prove it.
