I am very curious about the ancestry of the wife of John Cotton, son of Sir Thomas Cotton, son of Robert Bruce Cotton. John Cotton was born in England and died in Virginia. His wife, Anne, wrote a History of Bacon's Rebellion, defending the rebels. Information I have on this John and his wife Anne are as follows: John Cotton Sr B. 1625/26, ENG. ref: Sir, occ Justice, landowner, m. 1657, in VA to Anne Hutcheson b. 1630, VA?ENG, d. Queen's Creek, York Co., VA. John died 1691, VA. This line goes back to about 900. He came to America 1650 and settled in Queen's Creek. He was cousin of King Charles. John Favored Nathaniel Bacon so was in trouble with Governor Berkeley but wasn't harmed due to royal connections. He had land in York and Accomack Cos, VA. He first appeared in Isle of Wight Co, VA and Cotton family is one of the oldest families of NC. His wife Anne's name is either Hutcheson or Harrison. She wrote an account of Bacon's Rebellion. Evidently she was related to King Charles so no harm came to them in spite of their support for Bacon. This account is in MA Historical Society collection and is called "Our Late Troubles in Virginia: written about 1676. She also wrote "Narrative of the Indian and Civil Wars in Virginia in the years 1675 and 1676. Their son was John "Bertie" Cotton, b. 22 April 1658. I would love to correspond with those who have more information about this family. Does anyone know Anne's maiden name or her family connections? How was John related to King Charles? Why did he come to America? Are there any books about this family? Thanks for your assistance. Sharman Ramsey
