According to the Cotton Famiy of Portsmouth, NH Genealogy by Frank Ethridge Cotton, Portsmouth, NH was originally called Strawberry Banks, a very lovely name, I think. Now for your first Elzabeth who married George Knight,(no mention of a marriage to Shadrack Weymouth) Elizabeth b. probably June 16, 1720, bapt. Aug 28, 1720; m. (inst rec. in Kittery, Mar 1, 1739) George Knight of Kittery, a shipwright. No further info as to d/o/d or chn. She was the daughter of John Cotton (John2, William 1) and Elizabeth Davis d/o Timothy Davis of Portsmouth, the parents were married in 1714, and John Cotton died in 1723. Besides your Elizabeth b. 1720 they had John b. abt. 1715 bapt. Aug 28, 1720 prob. d. early, William b. prob. Dec 11, 1717 bapt. Aug 28, 1720; was a shipwright in Portsmouth; m. May 6, 1741, Esther, d/o Sampson and Sarah Babb of Portsmouth, who was bapt. there Feb 26, 1720/21. Timothy b. prob. in 1721; d. 1759. Mary, b. prob Mar 5, 1723/4. Your other Elizabeth Cotton m. to William Fernald was the daughter of William Cotton (William 1) and Abigail poss. Greenleaf but the author seems to disagree with this Greenleaf theory. They were m. abt 1678 or 1679. This William was described as a man of considerable property and influence and a member of the New Hampshire Provincial Assembly. William Cotton d. in 1737 and his will was proved June 6, 1737. William and Abigail (still living in 1733 when William Cotton made his will) had the following chn: i. William b. 1679 or 1680 d. Feb 28, 1717/1718. ii. John, Nothing known of him after 1696. iii. Elizabeth m. July 31, 1707, William, son of William and Elizabeth (Langdon) Fernald of Kittery. He was a shipwright in Kittery, b. May 11, 1686 and d. Jan 12, 1727/1728. She d. in 1761. Their chn: Mary, b. Mar 13, 1711, m. ? Mendum; William b. Feb 19, 1713; John; Eizabeth m. Joseph Lowd; George; (probably also Abigail)
iv. Joseph. Nothing known of him after 1696.
v. Abigail m. John Hardison, between 1717 and 1720. (William Cotton deeded a house and land to his daug. Abigail Cotton Oct. 30, 1717) Her chn: Mary bapt. Dec 4,1720; Stephen bapt. July 21, 1723. vi. Thomas d. 1745. vii. Mary b. 1696 m. in June 1715, Stephen s/o Capt. Stephen and Elizabeth (Gerrish) Greenleaf of Newbury, b. Oct 21, 1690. She d. May 29, 1733 and he married (2) Anne d/o Rev. John and Mary (Batter) Emerson by whom he had 3 sons and a daughter. By his wife Mary Cotton: Sarah bapt. Apr 15, 1716; Elizabeth bapt Feb 2, 1717/18; Abigail bapt. Apr 30, 1720; William bapt. Feb 8, 1722; Stephen bapt. Oct 15, 1724; John, bapt. Dec 25, 1726 and Mary bapt Mar 16, 1729. vii. Sarah, bapt. Apr 18, 1697; does not again appear, unless she was the Sarah who m. Henry Nicholson, Dec. 13,1716. Hope this helps. Linda
