Do you know what year he was born in??
I do have a John F. Cottrill,born about 1859,and he moved to Ohio and disappeared and no one knowes if he has a family or not.
I do have a Cottrill who disappeared from West Virginia after he deserted his first wife and remarried someone after he went west to Oklahoma or Kansas without divorcing his first wife.(He let his family believe he was dead)
But his second family did came forward to identify him.
He is the son of William Eldridge Cottrill & Deborah Nicholas.
I do have several more with no spouses or kids yet but are in different time frame.
