History of the Cote name.

One of my ancestors name was handed down as Mallicote. I can't find the name back much farther than about 1800. I suspect it was a sort of translation of Cote, since it can mean a coat of mail, as well as the coat of Arms. Has anyone done any research on this? It would be very helpful. I suspect my Margaret was in fact the daughter of a displaced Acadian. I've found a marriage between a Margaret Cose and a Valentine Boroff, which I suspect is in fact my ancestors. The Cose, could have been the way her name sounded to a non French. Thanks, Karen
