Jean Cote-dit-LeFrisé...Jean's aka name
Posted by: Janet Manseau (ID *****2030) Date: July 04, 2008 at 11:13:38
  of 2225

Hi, Recently Claire Starnes (I thank her for that) sent me a church document with the aka name of "LeFrisé". Till now I have never used this "dit" name because I did not know to which one of the Jeans it belonged to. I should have known, because Jette clearly points him out.

I am attaching my 3 generation file on this Coté family with my new notes. Please understand that genealogy is just a hobby for me and that it is not pure science and that I most likely have mistakes. Feel free to correct me anytime. I live in Oregon and do not have chruch records redily available. Enjoy, Janet

Descendants of Jean Cote

Generation No. 1

       1. Jean1 Cote was born about 1614 in Unknown, France, and died 27 Mar 1661 in Québec City, QC. He married Anne Martin 17 Nov 1634 in Notre Dame de Québec City, QC. She was born about 1603 in Unknown, France, and died 04 Dec 1684 in Québec City, QC.

Notes for Jean Cote:
His origins in France and his parents' names are unknown, though he is possibly from Mortagne, Perche. According to the Jesuit Relations, Jean arrived in Québec on 20 July 1634, either on the Saint Jacques or one of the other ships in the same flotilla.
Anne and Jean settled at Beauport, next to Noel Langlois and "Filles à Marier", Françoise Garnier/Grenier (she is believed to be the 1st single to arrive in New France). Noel Langlois granted Jean Coté a portion of the land that he owned.
There is a question concerning the year that Jean and Anne were married. Most records show that they were married on 17 Nov 1635. If that had been the case they would have married about a month after their son Louis was born and Anne Martin would have been 6 months pregnant before Jean left France. I am inclined to go along with PRDH and say that a wedding date of 17 Nov 1635 is an error and that they were married in 1634.. When their son Louis was baptized by Father Lallemant on 25 Oct 1635 the PRDH report # 57108 stated that Jean and Anne (the parents of Louis) were spouses. I have not seen the original birth records.
Jean Côté, a farmer, died 27 March 1661 in his home at Beauport and was buried in the church of Notre Dame in Québec City the next day.
Jean Costé’s widow Anne Martin and children Martin, Mathieu and Noel are listed with a “domestique engaigé” Michel Acoup in the Beauport 1666 Census. Their son Jean was not recorded with them; he was 22 at the time and must have left his parents' home and the other children were married before the 1666 census.
As for the father Jean Coté, he died before the 1st census in 1666 and no age was given in his death records. We can only guess at his age. Most young men arrived as pioneers in their young 20s. Jean married Anne just 4 months after he arrived. He must have paid his own expenses from France to New France, because it does not appear that he had a work contract. Most young men worked out a three year contract before getting married.
Before the King’s Daughters arrived, there were so few single girls that the men did not care about their wives being older or even extremely younger. I have his birth listed at “about 1614”, it is my educated guess. "About 1614" means just that, it could also be that he was born "about 1604". Given the facts, I do believe that she was 10 or 11 years older. A lot of people change their “about birth dates” because they believe the wife was younger. That was not always the case.
According to Jette, their grandson Jean (son of Martin Cote and Suzanne Page-dit-Quercy) seem to be the first of the Cotés to have used the aka name "le frisé.
By the year 1800, there were 567 marriages recorded, where the male still carried the Côté name that originated from Jean. This was the largest number recorded that still carried the original surname.

Notes for Anne Martin:
"Filles à Marier", page 218, Anne Martin was born about in 1603, though her origins in France and her parents' names are unknown. She may be the daughter of Galleran (or Gontrand) Martin, who died a widower at Beauport on 27 October 1662 at age 84. Anne appears to have arrived in New France in 1634, possibly on the same ship that brought her husband.
On 17 November 1634, Anne married Jean Cote in Québec City. No marriage contract has been found for this couple. Had one been found, we would know their parents; because that was required by law. The year of 1935 seems to be a church recording error. Their first child was born in October of 1635. Anne could not sign her name, though it is not known if her husband could.
Anne Martin survived her husband for more than 20 years, but never remarried. We can find her in the 1666 census as the widow of Jean Costé. She died on 04 December 1684 at age of about 80 in the house of F. Hazeur and was buried the next day in Québec City.
According to Jette, Anne Martin died on 04 December 1684 at age of 80. The death age was generally a guess. Jette says that she was listed as being 63 in the 1966 census and 64 in the 1667 census. Both census would put her birth at “about 1603”.

She was born 21 Feb 1645 in Québec City, QC, and died 15 Nov 1696 in Cap St. Ignace, Montmagny, QC.

In the Île d'Orléan's 1681 census, Martin Côté owned a gun, 10 horned animals and 15 acres of cultivated land.

Notes for Jean Cote:
His mother Anne Martin is recorded in the 1666 census as the widow of Jean Costé with sons Martin, Mathieu and Noel. I have not found Jean in the 1666 census.
Their daughter Marguerite became a nun at Hôtel Dieu (Québec City's Hospital) and was named Sister St. Paul. She was a novice 7 Feb 1693 and completed her vows on 17 Aug 1694.
Their daughter Anne became a nun, named Sister Sainte Genevieve, at Hôtel Dieu (Québec City's Hospital). She was a novice on 28 Feb 1698 and a full nun on 8 Sep 1699.
In a document from the church of St. Pierre de l'Île d'Orléans, QC, an Indian named Jean-Baptiste was buried on 16 Jan 1703 and was listed as a domestic of Jean Costé. Jean Costé and Philipe Noel assisted at the burial and signed the records. I believe ( and I could be wrong) this to be the Jean in the document above because the son of Philipe Noel assisted in the burial of this Jean Costé/Coté's grandson Jean Baptiste (1682-1736).
Jean Coté was Captain of the militia in Beauport in 1704 and 1707 and a church warden .
He died before the reading of their inventory by notary Babel on 26 Mar 1722.
Several web sites have recorded him as "Jean Coté dit LeFrisé". I believe this to be wrong. Jette records "Jean Coté dit LeFrisé" as the son of Martin Coté and Suzanne Pagé, married to Marie Anne Langlois on 8 Feb 1694 at Beauport.

Notes for Anne Couture:
This Anne Couture was born on 22 Jan 1652 in Québec, married to Jean Cote and was not recruited by the King as one of the "King's Daughter's" that arrived between 1663 and 1673 (as noted by many individuals on the www).
Anne Couture (whose parents were Jacques Couture and Marie Chevalier ) that married Jean Moreau in 1665 is the Anne Couture that was one of the King's Daughters.

Children of Jean Cote and Anne Couture are:
+       22       i.       Jean-Baptiste3 Cote, born 24 Aug 1670 in St. Pierre de l'Île d'Orléans, QC; died 22 Mar 1736 in Rimouski, QC.

In a document from St. Pierre de l'Île d'Orléans, QC, about Francois Sauvage (an Indian), Jean Coté uses the aka name "Le Frisé".
“Ce vingt huit septembre mil six cent 98 a eté inhume par Moy soubsigné Prestre cure de cette paroisse dans le cimatière de l’église francois de nation sauvage. Serviteur de Jean Costé dit le frisé habitant de la d’paroisse lequel est décédé le 27 du d’mois après avoir reçue les sacraments de penitence d’encharistie et d’extremonction, en Joy de guoz j’ai signé. Dayrue Prestre.”
A loose translation of the article about the death of Francois an Indian: "This 28 september 1698 was buried by monseigneur signed below Father of this parish in the cemetery of the church francois of the indian nation. Servant of Jean Costé aka le frisé resident of this parish where he died on the 27 of the month after receiving the sacraments of penitence an extremonction, with Joy I sign Dayrue Priest".
François may have been an indian made prisoner by the Iroquois and sold back to the Jesuits or other "coureur des bois". When back in the colony they used to be sold or given to an established farmer. They were then called "serviteur" (servants). The name of slave (esclave) was scarcely used in Canada.

Notes for Jean-Baptiste Cote:
Three of their children join my parents together in a loupe of Manseau, Ricards and Lavois.

Notes for Francoise-Marie Choret:
In 1700 her uncle Robert purchased land from her. She was married at the time so this was perhaps land that she inherited from her father. It is said that she was buried in the church at Île Verte.

Children of Jean-Baptiste Cote and Francoise-Marie Choret are:
65       i.       Marie-Anne4 Cote, born 14 Aug 1696 in Baie St. Paul, QC; died 12 Apr 1757 in Kamouraska, Kamouraska, QC. She married Gabriel Paradis 17 May 1718 in L'Îsle Verte, Rivière du Loup, QC; born 20 Feb 1675 in Ste. Famille de l'Île d'Orléans, Montmorency, QC; died 09 Dec 1755 in Kamouraska, QC.
66       ii.       Jean-Baptiste Cote, First Seigneur of Île Verte, born 09 Jul 1697 in Baie St. Paul, Charlevoix West, QC; died 19 Jul 1745 in Hôtel Dieu de Québec City, QC. He married Genevieve Bernier-dit-JeanDeParis 17 Jul 1720 in Cap St. Ignace, Montmangny, QC (ct 15, Michon); born 24 Mar 1697 in Cap St. Ignace, Montmagny, QC.

Notes for Jean-Baptiste Cote, First Seigneur of Île Verte:
He and his brother married sisters in a double wedding on 17 July 1720.
Several individual have Jean Baptiste's death date as being 3 Jan 1756. I have not yet found this to be true. PRDH has him as dying on 20 Jul 1745 at Hôtel Dieu in Québec City. This was a hospital for the very sick and dying. It would seem like a long distance for him to travel to go to that hospital, yet the PRDH burial record said that he was a resident of Île Verte. Another thing that help convince me that perhaps PRDH was right was that Jean-Baptiste was recorded as being dead at the time of his daughter's marriage in 1748 at Rivière Ouelle.

Notes for Genevieve Bernier-dit-JeanDeParis:
Both Genevieve and her sister Ursule-Marie Bernier-dit-JeanDeParis married Cote brothers in a double wedding on 17 July 1720.

67       iii.       Gabriel Cote, born 17 Nov 1698 in Baie St. Paul, Charlevoix West, QC; died 01 Feb 1767 in Baie St. Paul, Charlevoix West, QC. He married (1) Elisabeth-I.-Genevieve Bernier-dit-JeanDeParis 07 Oct 1722 in Cap St. Ignace or Québec City, QC; born 14 Jan 1704 in Cap St. Ignace de Loyola, Montmagny, QC; died Bef. 06 Nov 1740 in Unknown, QC. He married (2) Marie-Madeleine Lebel 06 Nov 1740 in St. Louis, Kamouraska, QC; born about 1712 in Unknown, QC; died 22 Nov 1794 in L'Îsle Verte, Rivière du Loup, QC.

Notes for Gabriel Cote:
One daughter from each of his two marriages are my ancestors and form a loop between my parents. There are several such loops in my French Canadian roots. Here my parents become 6th cousins once removed.
I am not recording a marriage of his daughter Marie Ursule because of the confusion. I am not even sure if Gabriel & Marie-Madeleine Lebel had a daughter Marie-Ursule (with no birth information). People on the web have Basile Guyon-dit-Dion married to her on 1 Sep 1779.
PRDH marriage #68344 claims that Gabriel Cote was a resident of Riviere Verte at Kamouraska and that Elisabeth Bernier was a resident of Cap St. Ignace when they were married. Yet PRDH claims that they were married in Québec (perhaps where the records were kept). I take that to mean Québec City or they would have said Cap. St. Ignace. At this marriage Thiboult a resident of Québec was the "Cure, Official" (parish priest).

68       iv.       Paul Cote, born 25 Feb 1700 in St. Pierre de l'Île d'Orléans, QC; died 20 Mar 1700 in St. Pierre de l'Île d'Orléans, QC.

71       vii.       Francoise Cote, born 29 Apr 1704 in Baie St. Paul, Charlevoix, QC; died 31 Mar 1793 in L'Îsle Verte, Rivière du Loup, QC. She married Ange Guyon-dit-DuBuisson 13 Feb 1736 in Rimouski, QC; born about 1710 in Unknown, QC.
72       viii.       Marie-Catherine-ditte-Agathe Cote, born 18 Jan 1708 in Baie St. Paul, Charlevoix West, QC. She married Vincent Rioux, Co Seigneur 20 Aug 1731 in St. Germain, Rimouski, QC; born 14 Feb 1690 in Ste. Famille de l'Île d'Orléans, Montmorency, QC; died Bef. 22 May 1756 in Trois Pistoles, Rivière du Loup, QC.

Notes for Vincent Rioux, Co Seigneur:
He inherited a part of Trois Pistoles from his father. No record of his death was found and it is assumed that he died along with several other members of the Rioux family during the smallpox epidemic in early 1756. On 5 Nov 1756, his widow's inventory was read. Several of his descendants dropped the "x" in Rioux.

75       xi.       Marie-Genevieve Cote, born about 1717 in Unknown, QC; died 05 Mar 1759 in Rivère Ouelle, Kamouraska, QC. She married Jean-Baptiste Levesque 13 Feb 1736 in St. Germain, Rimouski, New Brunswick, Canada; born 09 Apr 1710 in Rivère Ouelle, Kamouraska, QC; died 04 May 1784 in Rivère Ouelle, Kamouraska, QC.

Notes for Marie-Genevieve Cote:
She and her older sister had a double wedding on Feb. 13, 1736. Source of this information is in Tanguay, Volume I, Page 141. Genevieve was baptized in 1717 and was buried 6 Mar 1759 (Tanguay, Volume V, Page 398).

76       xii.       Nicolas Cote, born about 1720 in Unknown, QC; died 22 Feb 1791 in Montréal, QC. He married Marie-Claude Levasseur 10 Apr 1741 in Kamouraska, QC; born about 1721 in Unknown, QC.

She was born 25 Dec 1684 in St. Pierre de l'Île d'Oleans, QC.
