Sometime in the 1800s in Canada, the story goes, that some Warner children were orphaned. Some were adopted and allowed to keep the Warner name. The others were adopted by a different family and took the name of their adoptive parents. I know that either my great-grandfather or his father was one of them and kept the Warner name. My great-grandfather was William Warner, born in 1852 we think in Ontario. His father, also named William, was born in England. His mother, Mary Jane Chartrand, was born was French Canadian and spoke only French and he spoke only English. I don't know any of the names of any other children or futher back in the pedigree. William (my great-grandfather) married Matilda Pigeon, who was a school teacher in Montreal, daughter of Joseph Pigeon and Matilda Julliet. They had 6 children, the youngest 2-3 of which were born after they immigrated to Michigan. My grandfather, Walter Warner, was born in Port Huron in 1885, #5 of the 6. He lived in the Saginaw and Flint areas most of his life. He was a firefighter with a railroad for a short time before becoming an engineer. My Dad, Walter Maurice Warner, passed away in 1981 when he was 59 and I was 12. He is said to have tried to trace the Cote line and that they were relatives. His sisters, my aunts who are in their 80s, say that there was a Cote family in Port Huron and they would come to visit them in Flint when they were children. They would also go to visit them in Port Huron. They do not know how or if they are related to us, but remember them. It has also been said that the two families (the Warner kids who were adopted, those who kept the name and those who did not) had reunions, but the Warners eventually stopped going because it was getting to be less and less Warner and more and more of the other name. One of my cousins, now in her 60s, remembers going to Warner-Tibbetts reunions as a child, but nothing more. She believes they were held in Michigan. Do these clues ring any bells for anyone?
