A seaman by the name of Cota was shipwrecked with my ancestor, John McCormick, around 1848 according to a McCormick bio I have in my files. McCormick sailed (from Boston) "on a fishing vessel to Nova Scotia and the Bay of Fundy...The next year he went to the West Indies, stopping at Kingston, on the island of Jamaica. His vessel encountered shipwreck while returning to Halifax and every soul on board was lost but two, --Mr. McCormick and a man named COTA! They clung to the wreck and passed eight days without food or drink, and only retained life by chewing bits of a greasy moccasin which came by chance within their reach! They were rescued by an American vessel and brought to Boston, Mass. The ship proceeded to New York and sailed thence to the coast of South America, finally arriving at New Orleans, where the crew was discharged, and Mr McCormick received...gold for his services..."
