Hi Francelia, There are a lot of towns called St Charles in Canada. But I am sure the one your family comes from is St-Charles-sur-Richelieu in Quebec. As you probably know, Lake Champlain is the boundary between up-state New York and Vermont. It drains north into the Richelieu River that flows into the St Lawrence. St Charles is a little village on the east side of the river just north of the town of Beloeuil, north-east of Montreal.
The family name you should be looking for is Côté, a very common French name. Check out the other messages I left on the bulletin board in this family forum.
I don't know anything about the surname Bettes. However, it sounds German, and you may find that her ancestors were Hessian or Brunswick soldiers who fought with the British during the Revolutionary War, and who stayed in Canada after they were decommissioned.
Good luck. Bob
