Nancy, Sorry to have taken so long. I've been terribly busy. The information I have is taken directly from a copy of my grandmother's ancestor sheet which was given to me by an older sister. I cannot guarantee that there are no mistakes. She did cite her sources, so it shouldn't be too difficult to check. Hoyl 1/1740, Jun. 1/Margaret Rebecca Costner Sarah Hoyl/1745/(unmarried) AUTHORITIES PROVING SERVICES OF ANCESTOR, WITH DETAILS Colonial Records, Vol. 23 show in the Spaniah Alarm, 1748, Peter Hoyl (Peiter Heyl) enrolled as a militiaman in Capt. Dry's Company. Colonial Records, Vol. 22, Page 281, show that in 1748 Peter Hoyl (Peiter Heyl) was included in a list of men in the Spanish Alarm under comman of Capt. Samuel Corbin. He was also a member of the Committee of Safety in 1748. Colonial Records, Vol. 22, Page 429, show that in March, 1771, John Hoyl was a lietenant in an expedition against the Cherokee Indians. He fought in the Revolutionary War with Col. Frederick Hambright. For his services in the battle of Kings Mountain, Oct. 7, 1780, he received 1150 acres of land on Knob Creek, in Rutherford co., near Cleveland Co., North Carolina.
