TEWKSBURY -- Diniz Pacheco Demelo, age 89, a retired employee of Hyde Shoe, died peacefully Tuesday night, April 27, at his home in Tewksbury, surrounded by his family, after a five week battle with liver cancer. He was the beloved husband of Maria H. (Cabral) Demelo, with whom he had celebrated a 58th wedding anniversary this past December 19. He was born in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, on December 10, 1920, one of nine children born to the late Manuel and Maria E. (Costa) Demelo. He emigrated to Cambridge 34 years ago, and settled in Tewksbury 16 years ago. He was employed in shoe manufacturing for the Hyde Shoe Company in Cambridge, and later Peabody. As a resident of Tewksbury, he was a communicant of St. William's Church. While he was best known for his devotion to his family, and was also known for his love of soccer, and was an enthusiastic fan of the Benfica Sports Club in Portugal. Besides his wife, he is survived by four children, Nevia Calouro and her husband, Carlos of Tewksbury, with whom he shared their home, Dinis Pacheco and his wife, Diana A. of New Bedford, Francisco Alberto Pacheco and his wife, Josi of Haverhill, Mozart Evaristo Melo and his wife, Maria Zulmira of Tewksbury; nine grandchildren, Deborah "Debbie" Winter, Stephen A. Calouro, Jessica Melo, Jason Melo, Jennifer Calouro, all of Tewksbury, Timmy Pacheco of Methuen, Melissa Pacheco of New Bedford, Jordana Lopes of Haverhill, Jeffrey Calouro of Winthrop; six great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Ryan W., Nicholas, Matthew, and Ryan A.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
