Costa is a very popular portuguese surname. Generally, the "Costas" from Portugal were, in the old times, Jews. At the centuries XV the one XVIII they were chased. A few escape to other countries, other have been killed.
The jews that remain in Portugal have been constrained to convert at the christian religion and were named new christians. The name Costa means that they live in the proximity of the sea (Costa means, in Portuguese, near the sea). In Portugal, namely in the north, near Atlantic Ocean, there are a lot of people named Costa.
