Howard M. Cosier, b. 1861, Cumberland Co., NJ > 1881 MT-Bio

A biography/family history of Howard M. Cosier is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 780 & 781. His great-grandfather, Benjamin Cosier, came from England and founded the family in New Jersey. Benjamin was a gunsmith and blacksmith and died in Down Township at age 106. Benjamin's sons were Jonathan and Benjamin. Jonathan, the grandfather of Howard M. Cosier, was born in NJ, married Mary Cantwell, and spent his life in NJ as a farmer and blacksmith. Their children were: Valentine, Phenix, William, Mary (Mrs. Thomas Bell); George.

Howard M. Cosier was born, 21 Mar 1861, the only child of Phenix and Phebe (Gandy) Cosier. Phenix was a carpenter; he died in NJ in Aug 1912.

Howard spent his early life in Cedarville, NJ, attended public schools there and boarding school at Bridgeton. He graduated in 1880 & worked for a year in a country store. In 1881 he arrived at the Poplar Creek Agency of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation and went to work at the trading post. He later set up a store of his own, then in Apr 1914 consolidated his store with Ralph Patch's store, making the Cosier-Patch Company one of the largest general mercantiles in that section of Montana. In Dec 1889, he became post master of Poplar and served for 26 years. He established the Traders State Bank in Poplar, MT, in 1909, of which he was president. He was secretary/treasurer of Poplar Lumber and Implement Co., secretary of the Pioneer Auto Company, director in the Walker Opera House Co. and the Gateway Hotel Co. He became mayor of Poplar when it was incorporated in 1916.

On 27 Dec 1893, Cedarville, NJ, Howard Cosier married Miss Gertrude Cobb, born 1 Mar 1863, Camden, NJ, daughter of Josiah M. and Harriet S. (Corson) Cobb, natives of NJ.

Cosier children: Phebe (Mrs. Wade J. Hubbell, Poplar, MT); Dorothy (was a member of the Class of 1921, Ward-Belmont Seminary, Nashville, TN).
