I have a Daniel COSS b c.1821-1827 Laois, Ireland the son of Thomas and (?) COSS; and his wife Hannah O'BRIEN the daughter of John and Mary (?) O'BRIEN b c.1828-1835, of Tipperary, Ireland. Daniel came about 1850 to New York probably via Dublin, either with a sister named Anna, or his wife may have been recorded as Anna instead of Hannah. I found a 21 Oct 1850 sailing that might be them. Their first child I am aware of was a Thomas COSS who later married Ellen Sherlock in New York. (date unknown c. 1878-79). The family was living in the Monroe, Orange, NY area from about 1855-1871, when they moved to Waterbury, New Haven, CT. Their youngest daughter Maria died there and is buried in the Old St Josephs cemetary Maria COSS d. 15 Jan 1873 age 7. The family had set up house on Railroad Hill St overlooking the Naugatuck River and the Railroad tracks. (sounds like the poor side of the tracks to me). For a few years Daniel labored and then by 1878 Daniel began a sallon right out of the house, known as COSS's Saloon. How's that for Irish! Thomas and Ellen had several children from 1880-1897. Margaret /Maggie COSS daughter of Daniel and Hannah was married twice; first to Patrick Kelly in 1878, and second to James O'Laughlin in 1891. Maggie O'Laughlin, and her family, and nephew (F.J.QUINN) later moved to Port Huron, St Clair, MI. Thomas and Maggie had a brother William COSS, b Oct 1859 who married Mary Brophy, and transplanted back to New York City by 1887. However a note was found in 1894, which noted a William CROSS was living in Reading, PA. So perhaps William moved west to PA? (still, checking on.); Julia A COSS was married in Waterbury to Edward J QUINN b in Pottsville, Schuykill, PA son of Irish imigrants names unknown, about 1858-1861. They had one child, a son Francis Joseph QUINN, (my g Grandpa), born in 1885 Waterbury, CT. Julia died in 1887, and Edward died a few years later in a homicide or suicide near Long Island City, Queens, NY 1892! The young lad was in the custody of his Grandmother Hannah (O'BRIEN) COSS, until she died a year later, and then the Saloon was closed and his Aunt Katie, (Catherine A) b. in Monroe, Orange, NY June of 1869, took over his care, and 10 Jan 1896, SHE died too! At this point he was placed in the care of his Aunt Maggie, (above). And she raised him to adulthood. The above siblings also had a brother Daniel who died 1 Jan 1894 age only 21, and I don't believe he ever married, but he was born in 1872 in Monroe, NY too.
