I agree with the fact that most of the surnames listed as Sephardic in origin, in Spain as well as in Portugal, are indeed of Jewish origin, but originally they weren't, and there are still noblemen in these countries, who are Correas, Calderons, Toledos, Mendozas, and Enriquez, of non Jewish ancestry. However, many of the Jews of Spain that refused to be baptized were banished from the kingdom, and still today bear Jewish surnames like Avrabanel, Chocron, Benlolo, etc.Others that were already baptized, apostatized and returned to the Jewish faith, and still bear their Christian surnames. Most of them went to North Africa, Greece, the Balkans, Turkey and southern Ukraine.
A similar case occured in the Ashkenazim of central and eastern Europe.A good example of this were the Rosenbergs.Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were Ashkenazi Jews executed in the electric chair in the USA on charges of treason, whereas Alfred Rosenberg was a non-Jewish Nazi fanatic, executed at Nuremberg in 1946.Otto Frank, his wife and his daughters Anne and Margot were also German Ashkenazi Jews living in Amsterdam, sent to concentration camps, where most of them died, whereas Hans Frank was a fervent Nazi, governor of Poland, who was executed at Nuremberg in 1946.He was also non-Jewish.However there are also Ashkenazi Jews that bear typical Jewish surnames, like Shapiro, Rabinovich, etc.
By the way, I recognize my Correa surname as a Portuguese marrano surname, settled in Puerto Rico in the early XVII century, of which I am very proud. As soon as I found out this fact, I bought a menorah, which I have in my living room.I am still a Catholic though.
