I just saw your post. My mother's uncle, Felipe Correa, was a WWII soldier. Although, I never knew him, the story goes that he settled in France, married a french woman, and settled there with his family. He never returned home to his native Puerto Rico, and as far as I know he died there. I don't know if he is the "Cougar" you are looking for but I will ask my mom to see if he had such a nickname.
