Proof That Simon Cornwell Did Not Marry Molly Johnson, daughter of Moses Johnson
Proof That Simon Cornwell Did Not Marry Molly Johnson, Fauquier County, Virginia
There has been a wide-spread misconception that Simon Cornwell (c. 1745 - 1824) married Molly Johnson, daughter of Moses Johnson.
I believe that this misconception has its roots in the following marriage bond that has been read as being a marriage bond for the marriage of Simon Cornwell and Molly Johnson, when in fact, it was the marriage bond for John Carter and Molly Johnson:Carter, John. 96H/Simon Cornwell. MB June 4, 1796 to Rebecca Johnson. bd Howsen Duncan.
Rebecca Johnson who married John Carter was the daughter of Tunis Johnson, as proven by Tunis Johnson's will, dated 1807, (contained in the 1817 Chancery Court Case Rep(s) of Tunis Johnson v. Yellis Johnson, etc.), which states, in pertinent part:
"I have heretofore put into the possession of my daughter Rebekah Carter, decd that the same may go and be inherited by my grand son John A. Carter, the son of my Daughter Rebekah."
Further, the will of Moses Johnson/Johnston named daughter Molly Johnson (i.e., unmarried) in 1804 during the same year that Simon Cornwell was known to have been married to a Phebe (Simon and Phebe Cornwell named in a deed dated 1804), thus showing without a doubt that Molly Johnson d/o Moses Johnson did not marry Simon Cornwell.
