Part of your story may be incorrect. Per the 1930 census states that your Mary was born in VA and her parents also born in US and so could not meet Roman on the ship coming over. You may already have this info:

1930 DC Washington Washington Dist270
Hornig Joseph A head 45 married at 37 (born in DC)(father born in GER)(mother born in VA)
Hornig Rose L wife 47 married at 30 DC MD MD
Hornig Roman father 79 married a t25 GER Bavaria GER Bavaria GER Bavaria
Hornig Mary mother 84 married at 30 VA NC VA

1900 DC Washington Washington Dist143
Hornig Roman head Dec 1851 48 married 24yrs GER GER GER immigrated 1870 Butcher
Hornig Mary R wife Jul 1845 54 married 24yrs 4 born 4 living VA VA MD(this info doesn't match 1930 census)
Hornig Andrew L son Sep 1879 20 DC GER VA
Hornig Barbrey L dau Jan 1882 18 DC GER VA
Hornig Joseph A son Jul 1874 or 1884 listed as 15 DC GER VA

1880 DC Washington Washington Dist34
written on census as Horning
Horning Roman 27 works for butcher Baden Baden Baden
Horning Mary 31 wife VA VA VA
Horning John A 3 son DC Baden VA
Horning Andrew T 9/12 b. Sep son DC Baden VA

Good luck,
Mary in CA
