Barkla, Cornwall -> Australia

I am trying to track the antecedents of James Barkla, born about 1836 in Cornwall.

Extract from 'Australia's Little Cornwall':
Captain J. Barkla, who joined the staff of the Moonta in 1864, was the chief underground officer for many years.

Sailed (with his wife, Jane) from Plymouth on 15 Jan 1857, in the "Carnatic". Arrived on 28 April 1857, accompanied by their two daughters, Matilda 3, and Thirza 2.
