Susan is listed as age 10 living in Madison's household in the 1880 Marshall Co., AL census. Family Search Records Alabama 1908-1974 lists a Susie Matthews - d/o Madison Cornelius and Susan Little. Knowing that America Gately's mother was married to Mathias Little it appears the informant was only partially correct. Her birth is listed as 1871 and death 30 June 1951 in Gadsden AL.
Researching reveals that Susan Cornelius married 1st William Griffin (Apr 1891) and #2 Charlie Matthews (abt 1905). The following census records have been found:
1900 Marshall Co., AL, ED 90, Sh 10B: William Griffin, Jan 1867, 33, AL; Susan, Jul 1871, 28, AL; Elizabeth, Feb 1895, 4, AL; Gurley, Apr 1899, 1, AL. Married 9 years.
1910 Marshall Co., AL, ED 101, Sh 1A: Charley Matthew, 43, AL; Susan E., 37, AL; Tom M., 14, AL; Mattie E., 13, AL; Edward M., 3, AL; James M., 2, AL; Macie E. Griffin, 15, AL, step-daughter. Marriage #2 for both. Married 5 years.
1920 Marshall Co., AL, Ed 129, Sh 6A: Charlie Matthews, 53, AL; Susan, 48, AL; Mattie, 21, AL; Sudie, 19, AL; Edward M., 14, AL; James M., 2, AL
1930 Marshall Co., AL, ED 48-29, Sh 3B: Macy Bright, 35, AL; Catherine, 12, AL; Lillian, 10, AL; Hassie, 7, AL; James, 4, AL, Lillie (Nellie) M. (Mae), 1 2/12, AL; Susan Matthews, 59, AL, Wd, Mother.
Can anyone verify that this "Susan" is indeed the daughter of Madison, or supply additional info?
