I do not believe we know the answer to that question.
["I have seen some entries in several sites on the internet stating that the parents of Garrett (who married Marietje Lammerse) were Mattheus Cornelisse von Nieuwkirk and Catryna Poulas. I have some records in my files related to this suggestion. It is correct that Mattheus and his second wife, Catryna, had a son Garrett born 18 Nov 1696 in Bergen, East Jersey. That Garrett (shown on the marriage record to be the son of Mattheus and not previously married) married Catryntje Kuypers 5 Sep 1730 Bergen, NJ. Thus, I conclude Mattheus and Catryna were not the parents of Garrett Cornelison who married Marietje Lammerse 1726. Garrett was the son of a man whose first name was Cornelis." –From Nancy Cornelison Roberts, Cornelison researcher, genealogist, author]
